Every traveller on the RhB knows these blue ticket machines that you find at all RhB stations. Even model railroaders can have them, made as → 1:87 models by Pirovino! To be honest: Many RhB travellers were annoyed at these machines, either because the route that they wanted to take was not available or because these machines only accepted 20-Franken bills. Even with 10- or 50-Franken banknotes in your wallet, you couldn't buy a ticket. |
The RhB has reacted and has solved this problem. As more and more stations are no longer manned – whether this is a good idea for a railway that is dependent on tourism is another issue –, a new generation of ticket vending machines will be installed in 2008.
During a visit to the Landquart depot on January 31, 2008, I found a lot of these new machines, just recently delivered and still wrapped in plastic:

The new ticket machine – similar in design to those found at SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) stations. I hope that the functions will be similar, too, and that (welcome to the 21st century!) the new machines will accept eurocheque- or even credit-cards. |
