Rhaetian Railway (RhB) – Prototype and H0m Model Railroading

RhB tickets

RhB standard tickets

The usual RhB ticket looks just like any Swiss railway ticket as issued, e.g., by the SBB. Not a very exciting design; the ticket is reduced to its basic function. You do not even see that you are riding an RhB train.

"combination ticket"

The ticket looks a bit different if it is a “combination ticket” as shown here: This ticket is valid for the railway ride and also allows you to use the city bus in Scuol. (An additional tag for entry into the “Bogn Engiadina” bath in Scuol was removed.)

Ticket from vending machine Ticket from parking lot in Landquart

Here, you know at least that this is an RhB ticket, but this version from the vending machine in Wiesen (“Von WI” = “from Wiesen”) does not even show you the destination.
Its graphical design is about as artistic as a parking ticket (cf. ticket from the RhB parking lot in Landquart on the right …)

Karte aus Automat in Guarda Karte aus Automat in Wiesen

The vending machines in Guarda (left, 1999) and Wiesen (right, 2005) show that you can do better: Though they are not labeled “RhB” or “Rhätische Bahn,” the (colour!) background picture more than makes up for this. In my opinion, the best version.

Ticket bought on the train

This is a ticket that was bought on the train – it shows the date and the number of the train. These tickets are only valid for the ride on which they were bought.

Ticket for "test ride" through the Vereina tunnel

A rare item: it was issued on November 1, 1999, the first day of the “test rides” through the Vereina tunnel.
Alex Durner reported that it was a perfect ride without any problems (we hadn't expected anything else from the RhB …).

Unfortunately, the “classical” Edmondson tickets, 30 x 57 mm in size, have (nearly) completely disappeared from daily routine service. On the left, you see a standard ticket from the year 1967, in the middle, an Edmondson ticket that was issued for the steam tour on October 11, 1998 (I was a bit disappointed that there was no such ticket for the Engadin steam tour on October 9, 1999), and on the right, a ticket from the last (?) station on the RhB network where they are routinely used: At Langwies station (Arosa line), Edmondson tickets were still issued in October 1999!

Edmondson ticket collection

This is a special collectors' edition of Edmondson tickets issued by the RhB. They were printed on the original machine from 1903:

The “Schlittel-Billette” are very special tickets. When the Albula pass is closed for motorized traffic in winter, special “Schlittelzüge” (“sledding trains”) operate between Bergün and Preda. As the name says, passengers get back to Bergün by sledge along the (then closed) road.
