On March 26, 1997, an important event was celebrated at the Vereina tunnel: The equivalent of a topping-out ceremony for a house in a tunnel is the “final cut,” and on this day, the northern and southern teams met in the tunnel at km 11.574 – the final cut was made!
Uwe-Ingo Rückmar from Frankfurt/Germany was present at this event; he kindly let me have some pictures of the ceremoy for this webpage.

Uwe titled this picture “The calm before the storm” – we look into the cavern at 11 a.m. on March 26, 1997 – the cut was made at 3:40 p.m. |

This picture was taken about 30 minutes after the cut. It gives an impression of the tunnel drill's dimensions – the machine is 200 metres long and has a weight of about 670 metric tons. |

Councilmen from the municipalities of Susch, Klosters and Lavin (from left to right) hold the sign that describes the event in Rhaetian; the inscription (cf. enlargement) says “Tunnel dal Vereina · Perforaziun · 26. März 1997”. |
