Rhaetian Railway (RhB) – Prototype and H0m Model Railroading

Names of RhB Locomotives

Beginning with # 1 “Rhätia,” all RhB locomotives had proper names. Initially, this was a series of eight class G 3/4 steam engines that were put into service between 1889 and 1896.
The first four Mallet locomotives, put into service in 1891 (No. 21 and 22) and 1896 (No. 23 und 24), also had names.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, locomotives weren't given names any more. The G 3/4 and Mallet engines that were put into service in this period and all 29 class G 4/5 steam locomotives never had a name.
The early electrical locomotives, from the G 2/4 (1912) to the Ge 6/6 I (“Crocodile”), were also never given a name.

With the first post-war generation of electrical locomotives, class Ge 4/4 I, the old practice to give some “life” to a locomotive with a proper name instead of just a road number was taken up again; the first of these engines was 601 “Albula.”
Let the locomotives have their individuality – the following listing may perhaps help a little.

Although locomotive No. 11 is widely known as “Heidi” today, it was only given this name long after its active duty when it was used in one of the numerous filmings of Johanna Spyri's “Heidi” novels.
