Rhaetian Railway (RhB) – Prototype and H0m Model Railroading

Locomotives used by the BCU

Please read the “Preface” on the page BCU – Bündner Cement Untervaz.

All BCU Diesel engines that I know were made by German companies. Today, only the modern MaK engine is left; it belongs to the third standardized type made by this manufacturer. The three-phase current technology is a specialty of this engine; this technology, which was highly esteemed in the eighties, is hardly found in private and industrial locomotives today.

The two engines made by the company Jung (which is no longer in the locomotive business) were Diesel-hydraulic locomotives with tiller steering; in the fifties and sixties, they were offered as standard types to private railways. Often, companies stocked up with these locomotives, like engine # 2. While “1” is used by a branch company of BCU today, “2” returned to Germany and is now performing its duties for a private railway company near Bremen.

Except for the normal push-pull-devices, it was a specialty of these locomotives that they also had the standard RhB coupling with a central buffer and screw couplings; this allowed better handling of narrow gauge cars on three-rail track.

Jung #12837
On May 30, 1994, “Lok 1” left Untervaz station headed
towards the company tracks pulling a train with excavated spoil
from the Vereina tunnel construction site.
Jung #13620
“Lok 1” of the German “Verden-Walsroder Eisenbahn” is the former “2”
of the BCU. On April 2, 1997, it was seen with a single car coming from
the industrial area “Verden Süd” headed for the DB station Verden.
MaK #700041
Pulling a train of RhB cement cars, the MaK engine reached Untervaz station
on August 5, 1994, coming from the cement factory.

All information from Jens Merte and from my own observations. I took all the pictures myself.
